The Honest Answer About Mushrooms & Weight Loss
Share
Maybe you’ve seen online advertisements from a big mushroom coffee brand claiming to “burn your stubborn belly fat” or “debloat instantly” with their product accompanied with poorly generated AI videos.

One company even compared their product to having the effectiveness of a GLP-1 like ozempic.
These ‘marketing’ efforts are apparently being compiled as evidence for a Class Action Lawsuit against this company, but that all remains to be seen.
Nevertheless, we just wanted to address this ‘marketing’ strategy and claims they contain.
First, no one believes in the power of mushrooms more than us. Even maybe sometimes to a fault.
But our goal first and foremost is to communicate the actual benefits of mushrooms based on scientific backed evidence or at least known historical use.
We’ve never made outlandish claims or dangled miracle cures preying on our customer’s bodily goals & insecurities.
So seeing larger, Ventured-Capitalized companies do this is upsetting, albeit somewhat expected.
Potentially the worst part besides the inherent lie, is the degradation to the customer’s intelligence, hard-earned money, and trust.
But equally as bad is the fact that one doesn’t need to lie to sell these amazing superfoods because
the reality of their amazing benefits are more than enough.
Either way, I’ve dug into the science to come up with the evidence backed realistic ways superfood mushrooms can support you with your weight loss goals.
A big caveat is just acknowledgement that the truth is that no mushroom, supplement, or superfood can replace the foundations of health which are nutrition, movement, and sleep. Though they can support your effort in all three of those.
1. Satiety and slower digestion from beta-glucans. Every medicinal mushroom carries beta-glucan soluble fiber, which slows gastric emptying and can blunt the urge to overeat.
2. Blood-sugar support. Maitake (and to a lesser degree reishi/chaga in animal models) is associated with improved insulin sensitivity and steadier post-meal glucose. Stable blood sugar means fewer crash-driven cravings.
3. Gut microbiome / prebiotic effect. Turkey tail (PSP/PSK) and beta-glucans broadly feed beneficial bacteria. The most-cited datapoint here is the 2015 reishi mouse study showing altered gut microbiota and reduced obesity on a high-fat diet — strong mechanistically, but it's a animal study, so take it for what that’s worth.
4. Energy for activity. Cordyceps "supports energy and exercise output" — more movement, more energy expenditure. Using cordyceps to help give you energy and motivation to move your body is a great way to achieve fitness goal.
5. Stress/cortisol. Cortisol (stress hormone) is tied to abdominal fat retention. Reishi supports the body's stress response which indirectly supports weight management. It also helps sleep which in turn can reduce stress.
We want to be clear on what mushrooms can and cannot do for you. Although they are not a miracle weight loss pill, mushrooms support the healthy habits that help you feel your best.
